Building Expansion and Growth

January 24, 2020

As MPA moves forward with its re-charter process, the MPA Board of Directors is excited to share it has approved both a Master Plan and moving forward with the Design Phase for that plan!  The Master Plan includes phased improvements to our existing building. A Master Plan is a long-term planning document that provides a conceptual layout for guidance on future growth and development.  The master plan provides the general framework for future, more specific decisions as the plan moves forward.  A master plan is not a static defined plan or detailed architectural plan. The approved Master Plan was developed to align with the MPA vision and strategic themes and is a culmination of input from the building committee, the staff, and the community (via postcards from last school year and the Back to School BBQ this year). We understand there are many questions surrounding this process. We hope the following outline will help answer these questions.

What are we building?

  • The MPA Board has approved a Master Plan that will enhance the Montessori experience for our children with an expansion to our existing building and pre-K through 6th grade program.
  • The plan provides for purposefully designed and supported outdoor learning spaces, flexible learning areas such as a gross-motor multipurpose room, improved playgrounds, improved security features, student and teacher collaboration spaces, additional classrooms, additional storage, and additional conference and meeting rooms.
  • Renderings of this master plan can be found by clicking here
  • This will be a phased approach. This expansion will not be done all at once due to financing and construction timelines.
  • The Plan allows for continued future expansion, makes the most use of our available resources and meets many of the current needs of the school.

Why are we building?

  • JeffCo voters graciously approved the passage of the 5B ballot initiative in the Fall of 2018. These funds must be solely used for building improvements over the next four years.
  • MPA desires to continue to grow enrollment, and this Plan allows us to work toward that goal.
  • MPA has current needs, such as improved security, more age-appropriate playground materials, and flexible learning spaces to address student needs. This plan addresses all of these needs.
  • Aligned with MPA’s commitment to providing a quality Montessori education, this plan provides expanded outdoor education opportunities.
  • The Plan aligns with MPA’s vision and strategic themes.

How are we financing this?

  • Due to MPA’s current needs and its ability to refinance current debt at a lower interest rate, the Board decided to begin building sooner rather than later.
  • Rather than pay down the existing debt as originally planned, MPA will refinance its current debt and use the 5B funds to move forward with this project. There were many reasons for this decision including new information on how updated tax laws will impact MPA and the Board’s desire to allow our current children to see the direct benefits of the 5B funds.
  • By refinancing its debt, MPA will gain substantial yearly savings that can be applied, with the 5B funds, to meet the current needs of MPA and our children without jeopardizing our fiscally sound position.
  • With a commitment to remaining fiscally secure, the Board has explored borrowing additional funds as needed to complete the Master Plan and will make those decisions at the conclusion of the Design Phase.

When will this take place?

  • The Board has secured an Owner’s Representative for this project. They will be working with school leadership, legal counsel, and the architects to produce a timeline and a phased approach. This timeline will be shared with the community in the coming weeks, once approved. It will also be available on the website.
  • Part of this timeline will take into consideration the need to create as little disruption as possible to the learning environment during the school year.

What if I have more questions about this?

  • The Board welcomes questions. Please feel free to reach out to any board member to help answer your questions.
